Tech is three miles away, and that has to mean something

East Palo Alto sits next to some of the most valuable technology companies in the world. Proximity alone has never been enough. A student needs a place to build something, a team that expects them back, and an adult who assumes they belong in the room.

That is what robotics provides. The Churrobots, FRC team #8048, are East Palo Alto's competition robotics team, and they are part of the Hope Horizon family. The team grew from 21 students to 36 in a single year, which is less a story about robots than about what happens when local kids are given a real thing to do.

Robotics teaches more than robots

A competition season runs on deadlines, budgets, disagreements, and failure. Students learn to weld a plan together, defend a design choice, lose a match, and come back Monday. Those are the transferable skills, and they show up in classrooms long before they show up in careers.

The pipeline matters too. Our robotics pathway runs at the elementary and middle school levels, so a student who discovers they like building at nine has somewhere to go at fourteen.

Who can join the robotics program?

Hope Horizon runs a robotics pathway across elementary and middle school that builds toward the high school competition team, the Churrobots (FRC #8048). Students connected to our programs can join at the level that fits their grade.

Does my child need experience to start?

No. Most students arrive with none. Seasons are built to teach fundamentals, and older students mentor newer ones, which is a large part of how the learning actually happens.

What does robotics give a student who does not go into tech?

Teamwork under a deadline, comfort with failure, and the experience of being trusted with real tools and a real budget. Those hold up in any field. The confidence that comes from building something that works is the part students mention years later.
