That flicker of surprise is the whole reason hands-on STEAM matters, and it is also the thing that is easiest to take away from a kid without anyone noticing. A robotics kit costs money. So do the mentors who know how to use it, the space to spread out in, the electricity, the replacement parts a season of trial and error eats through. In neighborhoods where those things are lying around, kids grow up assuming they are allowed to build. In neighborhoods where they are not, a lot of kids grow up assuming building is something other people do.

That assumption is quiet, and it is wrong, and it hardens early. This is a piece about why we refuse to let it harden here.

What happens when a kid builds instead of just reads about it

There is a difference between being told how a circuit works and closing one yourself and watching a light come on. The first is information. The second is an experience, and experiences stick in a way that facts on a worksheet rarely do. A kid who wires that circuit is not memorizing a diagram. They are learning, in their hands, that the world responds to what they do to it.

That lesson turns out to be bigger than science. A child who has fixed a robot that failed, who has traced a bug through their own code, who has rebuilt a gearbox at ten at night before a competition, has learned something that no lecture delivers: that a problem is a thing you take apart and solve, not a thing that happens to you. They carry that posture into math, into a hard book, into a setback that has nothing to do with engineering. Confidence built with your hands does not stay in your hands.

This is the "A" doing quiet work inside STEAM, too. Building something real is a creative act. There is design in it, and taste, and the stubborn artistry of making a thing not just function but function well. Kids who think they are "not science people" often discover, at a workbench, that they were makers all along and nobody had handed them the tools.

Does building robots actually lead anywhere?

It is a fair question, and the answer is better than a hunch. In 2024, researchers at Brandeis University published a longitudinal study following FIRST Robotics participants over time. Compared with similar peers, participants were significantly more likely to take STEM courses, to major in STEM, and to end up working in STEM fields. The effects were especially strong for young women, the exact group most often talked out of these rooms before they ever get to try.

Read that twice, because it cuts against a common worry. The concern with programs like this is that they are fun but frivolous, a nice afternoon that does not change much. The evidence says the opposite. Getting a kid to the workbench early is one of the more reliable ways to change what they believe is possible for their life, and then what they actually go do with it.

Why building shouldn't depend on a family's income

Here is the part that should bother us. Whether a kid gets to build something real is, right now, largely a matter of where they were born and what their parents earn. The Stanford researcher Sean Reardon has shown that the achievement gap between children from higher-income and lower-income families has grown by roughly 40 percent in recent decades, and is now nearly twice as large as the more familiar gap between Black and white students. That distance is not made of talent. It is made of access, of who gets the extra hour, the extra tool, the extra adult who knows how to open a door.

You can see the gap plainly from where we sit. Hope Horizon is in East Palo Alto, close enough to some of the most advanced technology companies on earth to see their offices across the water. And yet in the local Ravenswood City Elementary School District, during the 2024-25 school year, about 12 percent of students scored proficient or above in English on the state assessment, against a statewide figure closer to 49 percent. Roughly nine in ten students here come from low-income families. The kids who live in the shadow of the robotics industry are often the least likely to ever put their hands on a robot.

We think that is backward, and fixable. Not by lecturing anyone about the gap, but by handing the tools directly to the kids on the wrong side of it.

What this looks like on a corner of Beech Street

For 40 years, this work has run out of East Palo Alto, and today around 120 students come through our doors on a typical day. A few years back, our robotics program was small. Then it grew, from 21 students to 36, as more kids found out there was a place where they were allowed to build, and where somebody would teach them how.

Those students became the Churrobots, FIRST Robotics Competition team #8048, and to this day they are the FRC team in East Palo Alto. That "only" carries weight. It means that without this team, a kid in this city who wanted to compete at that level would have nowhere to go. The nearest door would be a door in another town, behind a fee, past a commute their family could not always make. Here, the door is on their own street, and it is open, and it is free.

Picture a girl who signs up half because her friend did. She is quiet the first week, sure she does not belong near the tools. Somebody hands her a task anyway, small and real. She does it. The next week the task is a little bigger. By the end of the season she is the one other kids ask when the code will not compile, and she has started saying the word "engineer" about herself, carefully, like trying on a coat she is not sure is hers. It fits. That is what a workshop is for.
