Most people have never been to one, so most people assume it must be a science fair with wheels. It is not. A FIRST Robotics Competition event is a full day of head-to-head matches on a field the size of a basketball court, with robots the size of a large dog throwing, climbing, and scoring in front of a crowd that genuinely loses its mind. The first time you walk into one, the noise alone tells you this is not a homework assignment. This is something the kids own.

Because our students at Hope Horizon compete, and because their families and neighbors are often walking into that arena for the first time, it is worth taking the mystery out of it. Here is what a robotics competition is actually like, hour by hour, and why the day matters long after the scoreboard resets.

First, what these kids brought with them

A competition does not start on competition day. It starts back in January, when FIRST reveals that season's game to every team in the world at the same moment, and the clock starts. Teams get a common set of rules and roughly six weeks to design, build, wire, and program a robot that can play it. By the time a team loads its robot into a crate and hauls it to an event, that machine represents weeks of late nights, failed prototypes, and arguments settled with a tape measure.

So when a team rolls its robot through the doors on the morning of an event, they are not arriving to be judged on a poster. They are arriving to see whether the thing they built actually works against everyone else's.

The morning: load-in, inspection, and the pit

The day opens early. Teams load in, usually somewhere between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning, and stake out a small square of space called the pit. Think of the pit as a working garage the size of a parking spot: a workbench, a battery charger, a toolbox, spare parts, and a robot on a cart. This is home base for the whole day, and it is where most of the real drama happens.

Before a robot is allowed to play a single match, it has to pass inspection. Inspectors go over the machine to make sure it follows the rules, fits the size limits, and is safe to put on a field with other robots. It is the robotics version of a pregame physical, and it is where a lot of teams discover that the thing they finished at midnight is one quarter-inch too tall.

Then comes opening ceremonies, and then the part everyone came for.

Late morning: qualification matches

Qualification matches run for much of the day, often from late morning into the early afternoon. Here is the twist that surprises newcomers: you do not just play against other teams, you play with them. Every match puts three robots on one alliance against three on the other, and the schedule shuffles your partners every single time. The team you fought two matches ago is on your side now.

That format changes everything about how the day feels. Between matches, students huddle with partners they may have just met to talk strategy: who plays offense, who defends, who handles the tricky scoring in the final seconds. Some teams walk over to a partner's pit an hour early to plan. Others sort it out in the queue line, heads together, while the match before theirs finishes. It is fast, social, and improvised, and it teaches a kind of teamwork you cannot fake.

You do not just play against other teams. You play with them, and your partners change every match.

Meanwhile, the pit never rests. A robot takes a hit, a chain slips, a motor gives out. The pit crew has minutes, sometimes less, to diagnose and fix it before the next match is called. This is where you see a fourteen-year-old kneeling on a concrete floor, multimeter in hand, calm as a surgeon, because the team is counting on her and she knows it.

Midday: alliance selection, the human moment

Around the middle of the day, after qualifying wraps, comes one of the most quietly intense parts of the whole event: alliance selection. The top-ranked teams become alliance captains, and one by one they pick the partners they want for the playoffs. Each team sends a small group of representatives, students out front, to make and answer the invitations.

On paper it is a draft. In practice it is a referendum on your reputation. Because every team has been quietly scouting every other team all day, tracking who plays clean, who scores reliably, who keeps their cool when a match goes sideways. A team can rank in the middle of the pack and still get picked early because everyone saw them handle a broken robot with grace. Ranking gets you noticed. Character gets you chosen. Kids feel the weight of that, and they remember it.

Afternoon: the playoffs

After a quick lunch, the playoffs begin, and the volume goes up. Now the alliances formed at selection fight it out in elimination rounds. The matches are faster, the stakes are higher, and the crowd knows it. A two-minute-something match can swing on a single climb in the final seconds, and when it does, an entire arena of teenagers erupts like a buzzer-beater just dropped.

This is the footage people share, and it earns it. But if you watch closely, you notice something you would not expect from a competition this fierce. Between matches, a team that just lost will walk a spare part over to the alliance that beat them. Rivals troubleshoot each other's wiring. That is not an accident. It is the whole point.

The part that is not on the scoreboard

FIRST builds its entire culture around an idea it calls Gracious Professionalism: compete hard, help each other, treat opponents with respect. It is not a poster on the wall. Events give out awards for community outreach, engineering design, and teamwork right alongside the ones for winning matches, and the most prestigious award of all goes not to the best robot but to the team that best embodies the mission and lifts up others. Kids learn, in their bodies, that how you win is part of whether you win.

Closing ceremonies wrap the day, robots go back in their crates, and the arena empties out. But the students carry the day home with them, and the research says it stays. A 2024 longitudinal study from Brandeis University found that FIRST participants were significantly more likely to take STEM courses, major in a STEM field, and go on to STEM careers than comparable peers, with especially strong effects for young women. A single loud Saturday, it turns out, is connected to a much longer arc.

Why this matters here

East Palo Alto sits in the shadow of Silicon Valley, close enough to see the campuses where robots and software are a day job, and yet the opportunity gap across that highway is enormous. In the local Ravenswood City Elementary School District during the 2024-25 school year, about 12 percent of students scored proficient or above in English on the state test, against roughly 49 percent statewide. Nine in ten students here come from low-income families.

Competition robotics is expensive, and the strongest teams tend to cluster where sponsors, tools, and travel budgets already exist. A kid growing up here can be every bit as sharp and never get within reach of a team. That is why Hope Horizon runs one. Our team, the Churrobots, FRC team #8048, is East Palo Alto's FIRST Robotics Competition team, and it has grown from 21 students to 36, a jump of about 70 percent, because word travels when a door like this opens. Ninety-three percent of the students we serve are Hispanic or Black, kids who are badly underrepresented in engineering. When one of them stands on a competition floor in a team shirt, robot ready, that picture does quiet work for every younger kid watching.

Faith runs underneath what we do, and it shows up in a plain conviction: every one of these kids was made with real gifts and deserves a place to use them. A competition floor, loud and fast and full of grace, turns out to be one of the best places we know to say so.
