Robotics can sound like a thing that happens somewhere else, in a lab, on the other side of a fence, to somebody else's kid. So let us take the mystery out of it, because underneath the acronyms it is one of the most human things a young person can do: make something real, with their hands, alongside people they trust, and stand behind it in public.
If you have ever wondered what FIRST Robotics actually is, why grown engineers get emotional about it, and why a robotics team is such a big deal for kids in a place like East Palo Alto, this is the plain guide. No jargon left unexplained.
So what is FIRST, really?
FIRST is a nonprofit. The name is an acronym, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, which tells you the point right in the title: the goal is not just robots, it is inspiring kids toward science and technology and giving them the recognition that athletes usually get. It was founded in 1989 by the inventor Dean Kamen, who was frustrated that a country that celebrated its ballplayers and pop stars had almost no bleachers for its young builders and problem solvers.
FIRST runs a whole ladder of programs by age, from LEGO-based challenges for little kids all the way up to high school. The one people usually mean by "FIRST Robotics" is the top rung, the FIRST Robotics Competition, or FRC, for high schoolers. That is the one with the industrial-sized robots, the arena, the crowds, and the six-week sprint.
How a season actually works
Here is the part that surprises people. Every FRC team in the world, from a small church-basement program to a team sponsored by a giant tech company, gets the exact same game and a standard kit of parts on the same day in January. Nobody gets the answers early. Then the clock starts, and each team has roughly six weeks to design, build, wire, and program a robot that can play that year's game.
The game changes every single season. One year the robot might need to stack game pieces; another year, launch them, or climb, or balance. Which means there is no template to copy from last time. The team has to figure it out, together, from scratch, under a real deadline, the way actual engineers do.
Then comes competition. Teams travel to regional events and play matches, usually grouped into temporary alliances with other teams, so you are cooperating and competing at the same time. And here is a detail that says everything about the culture: teams are judged not only on how their robot performs but on how they treat each other. FIRST has a phrase for this, "gracious professionalism," and it is not a slogan on a poster. Teams routinely lend parts, tools, and advice to the very rivals they are about to face. Kids learn that you can compete hard and still help the person across the field.
Six weeks, one box of parts, a problem nobody has solved yet. That is not a class. That is the job, rehearsed at sixteen.
Does it actually change anything for a kid?
It would be fair to ask whether all of this is just an expensive hobby. The research says it is a lot more than that. A 2024 longitudinal study from Brandeis University, which followed FIRST participants over years and compared them to similar peers, found that FIRST alumni were significantly more likely to take STEM courses, major in a STEM field in college, and go on to STEM careers. The effects were especially strong for young women, a group the tech world has spent decades failing to keep.
Think about what that means. A program a kid joins in high school is still visibly shaping their choices years later, in college and in the working world. Not because it crammed more facts into them, but because it let them be an engineer for a season, and discover that the role fit.
Why this matters so much three miles from the biggest tech companies on earth
Now bring it home. East Palo Alto sits in the shadow of Silicon Valley, close enough to see the campuses where the future is being built. And yet the opportunity gap between the two sides of that highway is enormous. In the local Ravenswood City Elementary School District during the 2024-25 school year, about 12 percent of students scored proficient or above in English on the state test, against roughly 49 percent statewide. Nine in ten students here come from low-income families.
Robotics does not erase that gap by itself. But think about who usually gets to be on these teams. The strongest FRC programs often cluster in well-resourced schools, with sponsors, mentors, and workshop space already in place. A kid growing up here can be every bit as sharp, as curious, as capable, and simply never get within reach of a team. The talent is not the thing in short supply. The door is.
That is why Hope Horizon runs one. Our team, the Churrobots, FRC team #8048, is East Palo Alto's FIRST Robotics Competition team. For a lot of our students, it is the first time they have held a real power tool, read a wiring diagram, or told a room full of judges how their machine works and why they built it that way. And the program is growing, from 21 students to 36, a jump of about 70 percent, because word gets around when a place like this exists.
Ninety-three percent of the students we serve are Hispanic or Black, kids who are wildly underrepresented in engineering. When one of them stands on a competition floor in a team shirt, robot in front of them, that picture is doing quiet work. It tells every younger kid watching that this is a room they belong in too.
What a season builds besides a robot
Ask people who have been through FRC what they remember, and it is rarely the trophy. It is the 11 p.m. night before a deadline when the code finally compiled. It is the older student who taught them to solder without making them feel stupid. It is the match where their robot broke and they fixed it in the pit in four minutes flat, hands shaking, and it worked.
A robotics season teaches the things that transfer to any life: how to break a scary problem into smaller ones, how to fail on Tuesday and try again on Wednesday, how to depend on a team and be depended on. It builds the plain confidence of a young person who has learned, in their body, that they can figure hard things out. For a kid who has been quietly told in a hundred small ways that the future is being built somewhere they are not invited, that lesson is close to priceless.
Faith runs underneath our work here, and it shows up in a simple conviction: every one of these kids was made with real gifts, and they deserve a place to use them. A robotics team turns out to be a very concrete way to say so.
