Watch a group of six-year-olds at a table full of gears and motors and you will not be able to tell you anything about who is going to grow up to be an engineer. The girls grab for the parts as fast as the boys. They argue about the design just as loudly. They are just as delighted when the thing finally moves and just as stubborn when it does not. At that age, curiosity has no gender. It is only a kid and a pile of interesting problems.
Something changes on the way up, though, and it is worth being precise about what. It is not that girls get worse at math. It is not that their brains take some turn away from science. What changes is the set of messages they receive about whose field this is, and those messages start arriving early and rarely stop.
What actually happens between six and sixteen?
There is no single switch that flips. But the pattern researchers keep finding is less about talent and more about belonging. A girl picks up, in a hundred quiet ways, a sense of whether a room is meant for her. The toys that get handed to her and to her brother. Who gets called on when the hard question comes. Whether the scientist in the movie, or the textbook, or the field trip, ever looks anything like her. None of these is a wall on its own. Together, over years, they can become one.
The middle-school years tend to be where it shows. That is the stretch when kids are most tuned to fitting in, most alert to any hint that they are the odd one out. A girl who is perfectly capable, and who was building circuits happily in third grade, can quietly conclude at twelve that robotics is a boy thing, not because anyone told her so outright but because the room kept telling her sideways. She does not fail at STEM. She excuses herself from it, and calls it a preference.
A girl does not lose the ability. She loses the sense that the room was ever meant for her. That part we can fix.
You can see the cost of all this at the far end of the pipeline, in the workforce numbers. The Census Bureau reports that women, who are nearly half of all U.S. workers, make up only about 27 percent of the science, technology, engineering and math workforce. In engineering specifically, the figure is around 15 percent. Women hold about a quarter of computing jobs, and their share of that field actually slipped between 1990 and 2019. This is not a story about a shortage of talented girls. It is a story about how many of them get quietly filtered out along the way.
Why does building something change the story?
Here is the encouraging part, and it is not wishful thinking. When you put girls into hands-on, team-based STEM, where they build real things and solve real problems next to peers and mentors, they tend to stay. And the effect is not small.
A longitudinal study out of Brandeis University followed young people who took part in FIRST, the robotics program our own team competes in. FIRST participants were significantly more likely to take STEM courses, to major in a STEM field, and to work in one later on. The researchers found the effects were even stronger for young women. In other words, the exact experience that our robotics kids get, a season of designing, wiring, failing, and fixing a competition robot, is the kind of experience that moves girls toward STEM rather than away from it.
It makes sense when you think about what a build actually gives a kid. It gives her competence she can feel in her hands, not just a grade on a page. It gives her a team, which means a place to belong while she is learning. And it gives her a problem that does not care who she is, only whether the robot works. A motor that will not spin is a wonderfully honest teacher. It never once suggests that engineering is for someone else.
What does this look like in East Palo Alto?
Our robotics program, the Churrobots, is East Palo Alto's FIRST Robotics Competition team, number 8048. Over a recent stretch it grew from 21 students to 36, which is a roughly 70 percent jump, and every one of those seats matters in a community where these opportunities are scarce and the nearest tech campuses might as well be on another planet. Around 93 percent of the students we serve are Hispanic or Black. For a lot of them, walking into our workshop is the first time a science field has felt like a place with their name on the door.
We pay attention to who is at the table. Picture a seventh grader, quiet, quick with numbers, who signs up half expecting to be the only girl and half expecting to hate it. The first week she hangs back and lets the louder kids grab the tools. Then a mentor hands her the wiring, not as a favor but because it needs doing, and stays next to her while she gets it wrong and then gets it right. By the third week she is the one explaining the wiring to somebody else. Nobody made a speech about girls in STEM. They just made sure she got her hands on the actual work, and that someone steady was beside her when she did.
How do you keep a girl in the room?
You do not need a lab or a grant to do your part. Most of what keeps a girl in STEM is the kind of thing an ordinary adult can offer.
Give her real problems, not just praise. Telling a girl she is smart is nice and forgettable. Handing her something broken and trusting her to fix it tells her something she will remember. Let her struggle a little, because the confidence that lasts is the kind she builds herself, on the far side of getting it wrong a few times. Point out the women already doing the work, in the news, in your family, in the neighborhood, so the picture in her head of a scientist quietly makes room for her. And most of all, connect her with an adult who keeps showing up.
That last one carries more weight than people expect. The Search Institute's research on developmental relationships finds that young people who have caring, challenging, consistent adults in their lives are more likely to be resilient and to thrive. For a girl deciding, mostly below the surface, whether a hard field is worth staying in, one mentor who plainly believes she belongs there can outweigh a lot of the sideways messages telling her she does not.
The robot never cares whether a builder is a boy or a girl. It only cares whether the wiring is right. Kids find that clarity freeing.
A door held open
None of this is about pushing girls toward careers they never wanted. It is about making sure the ones who do want it, and there are so many, never quietly count themselves out before they have really begun. Interest is fragile at the ages when it matters most. It can be talked out of a kid. It can also be built up, one solved problem and one steady adult at a time.
Forty years of this work have taught us that talent is spread evenly across every kind of kid, and opportunity is not. A girl in East Palo Alto with a knack for building deserves the same shot at it as a girl three miles away with a garage full of tools and a parent who does this for a living. We cannot hand every kid a garage. We can hand her a workshop, a real problem, and someone who stays. That turns out to be enough to keep a lot of doors from closing.
