There is a version of corporate giving that feels good for a quarter and disappears. A logo on a banner, a photo at a gala, a line in the annual report. It is not nothing. We run a team like that. The Churrobots, FIRST Robotics Competition team #8048, are East Palo Alto's FRC team. And we are writing this for the person at a Silicon Valley company who has a budget for community work, a building full of engineers, and a quiet suspicion that both could be aimed better.

What does it actually mean to adopt a team?

Adopting a team is more than a one-time gift. It is a decision to stand behind a group of students for a season, sometimes for years, and to treat their success as partly your own. In practice that looks like a mix of a few things, and you do not have to bring all of them.

Some companies underwrite the hard costs: competition registration, parts and tools, the workshop, the long travel days to events. Some send people instead of, or alongside, money, so their engineers and designers spend a few afternoons a month with students who are hungry to learn what they know. Some open a door, a tour of a real lab, a look at what these jobs actually are, a visit that lets a kid from East Palo Alto stand inside a future that had felt like it belonged to other people. Why is this a good investment, not just a good deed?

Here is the part that should interest a board. The talent shortage everyone complains about does not begin at the recruiting stage. It begins years earlier, in the gap between kids who get to touch the work and kids who never do. Robotics is one of the most direct ways to close that gap, and the research backs it up.

A longitudinal study out of Brandeis University found that young people who took part in FIRST Robotics were significantly more likely to take STEM courses, to major in STEM fields, and to work in STEM careers than comparable peers who did not, with especially strong effects for young women. That is the whole pipeline, from a high school workshop to a career, and the effect was strongest for exactly the students the industry says it wants more of.

Set that against the ground these students stand on. In the local Ravenswood City Elementary School District, during the 2024-25 school year, about 12 percent of students scored proficient or above in English on the state test, against a statewide figure closer to 49 percent. Roughly nine in ten students in the district come from low-income families. The talent is here. The opportunity, historically, has not been. A robotics team is one of the cleanest levers a company can pull to change that ratio.

Hope Horizon has been doing youth development in East Palo Alto for forty years, and we already coordinate 218 volunteers across our programs. The structure, the safety, the coaching, the relationships with families, all of that exists. What we need from a partner is fuel and, when you can offer it, a few skilled adults who are willing to show up.

The quiet math of a season

Think about what one adopted season sets in motion. A group of students spends months learning to design, wire, code, and troubleshoot under a real deadline, next to adults who do this for a living. They fail and fix and fail and fix, which is the actual curriculum. They travel to a competition and see hundreds of other kids who are into the same things they are, and the loneliness of being the "robotics kid" turns into belonging. A few of them decide, without saying it out loud, that this is who they are now.

Some of those students will be interns in a few years. Some will be the engineers your successors are trying to hire. And the ones who go a different direction still walk away with the habits, the confidence, and the proof that they can build something real. There is no version of that story where the investment was wasted.
