There is a strange kind of distance in Silicon Valley that a map cannot show you. You can stand on a corporate campus with a climbing wall and free lunch, look across the water, and see East Palo Alto. Same county, same freeway exits, roughly the same commute you already make. And yet the odds facing a kid on that side of the water are not remotely the same as the odds facing the children of the people inside the building.
Companies feel this distance most sharply at the top of the hiring funnel. Here is the part the org chart hides. A software engineer does not become hireable in a final-round interview. She becomes hireable across a decade of small doors that either opened or did not. Whether a fourth grader had a quiet place to read. Whether a seventh grader ever touched a circuit board. Whether a tenth grader met one adult who did the work she was dreaming about, and made it feel possible instead of foreign.
By the time a company sees a candidate, most of the pipeline has already happened. The question is not really whether the talent exists. It does. And the plain truth is that in a place like East Palo Alto, the early investment is exactly what the opportunity gap strips away.
Those first two numbers are hard, and we do not soften them. During the 2024-25 school year, roughly 12 percent of students in the local Ravenswood City Elementary School District scored proficient or above in English on the state assessment, against about 49 percent statewide, and close to nine in ten local students come from low-income families. But read them the right way. They are not a statement about the ceiling on these kids. They are a statement about the floor of opportunity that has been laid under them. Raise the floor, and you are not manufacturing talent that was not there. You are letting existing talent become visible.
What the research says about building it early
You do not have to take this on faith. When researchers at Brandeis University ran a long-term study following students who took part in FIRST Robotics, they found that participants were significantly more likely to take STEM courses, to major in STEM, and to work in STEM fields, with especially strong effects for young women. In other words, the exact thing hiring managers keep asking for, more women and more underrepresented candidates going into technical careers, traces back to programs that reach kids while they are still figuring out who they might become.

Hope Horizon has been on one corner of East Palo Alto for forty years. About 120 students come through on a typical school day. Our robotics team, the Churrobots, competes as FIRST Robotics Competition team #8048, the FRC team in East Palo Alto. In recent seasons it grew from 21 students to 36, close to a 70 percent jump, because demand from kids far outruns what we can currently field on our own.
